Website copywriting: how to write a home page that converts

Website copywriting for a home page: before and after headline examples, a three-line hero formula, and button copy that gets visitors to open a WhatsApp chat.

A website home page with a short headline, one supporting sentence, and a single button that leads to a WhatsApp chat.
The home page that converts is rarely the one with the most words. It is the one that can be understood fastest in the first five seconds.

Website copywriting is the work of choosing the words in every section of a page so visitors understand what you sell and know what to do next. On the home page, that work gets harder: one page has to serve people who have just heard your name, people comparing prices, and people who are ready to buy but need one last nudge. This guide covers how to write it, with before and after examples you can copy directly.

One thing first, to set expectations. Most website copywriting guides teach formulas that sound convincing but stop at theory. This one works the other way round: every section has concrete example sentences, including the ones business owners usually write and an improved version. We cover the button that leads to WhatsApp in the most detail, because for the Indonesian small businesses this guide was first written for, that is where the sales conversation actually happens. If your customers buy through a cart or a booking form, the same principles apply to that button.

What website copywriting is, and why the home page is the hardest to write

Website copywriting covers every piece of text a visitor reads: the headline, supporting sentences, service descriptions, button labels, and the small lines under forms often called microcopy (short text that explains what will happen after a visitor presses something). All of it has one job: to reduce doubt.

The home page is hard because its goal is the vaguest. A landing page is easy to write: one page for one offer, one button. If that is what you need, our guide on how to build a landing page covers it separately. The home page is not so lucky. It has to be the living room and the signpost at the same time.

So the home page really has only two jobs: explain who you are in five seconds, then point each type of visitor to the right next step. That discipline is what separates home page copywriting from writing any other page on the same site.

Our opinion, and people often push back on it at first: the home page is not the place for your company history. A sentence like "founded in 2018, we remain committed to delivering the best service" takes up the most valuable space on the screen with information nobody is looking for in the first second. The year you started is useful as proof of trust, but it belongs in the middle of the page, not the first line.

Visitors scan your page, they do not read it

This is the foundation that changes how you write. Nielsen Norman Group research found that 79 percent of test users always scanned any new page, and only 16 percent read word by word. Their follow-up study on how little text actually gets read concluded that visitors read at most 28 percent of the words during a visit, with 20 percent being more realistic.

Where they read is uneven too. NN/g's eyetracking study on scrolling and attention found that about 57 percent of page viewing time is spent above the fold, and 74 percent within the first two screenfuls. The scanning pattern itself tends to form an F shape: two horizontal sweeps at the top, then a movement down the left side.

Four practical consequences for your website copywriting:

  • Put the point first. NN/g even tested how well people understood the first 11 characters of a heading or link. If the first two words are still filler, the sentence effectively goes unread.
  • Write subheadings that stand on their own. Someone who reads only the subheadings should still understand the page.
  • One idea per paragraph. A five-line paragraph on a phone screen looks like a wall.
  • Save words, not information. NN/g's research on web writing style found that pages written to be concise, scannable, and objective scored 124 percent higher in usability than the promotional version.

Tip: Test your page the cheap way. Show it to someone who does not know your business for five seconds, close the screen, then ask "what do we sell, and to whom?" If they get it wrong, the problem is the headline, not the design.

The hero section: three lines that decide the rest

The hero section is the first screen before a visitor scrolls. It is the section most often rewritten in any website copywriting project, and for good reason: if these three lines fail, the rest of the page never gets read. It needs just three things, and the order matters.

Line 1, the headline. What you sell, to whom, and where. This is not the place for wordplay.

Line 2, the supporting sentence. One reason to choose you that can be checked. Not a quality, a fact.

Line 3, one button. The next action, written from the visitor's point of view.

Here are before and after headlines for six types of business we see often. Notice that the "after" versions are not more poetic, only more specific.

Type of business Before After
Daily catering Welcome to our kitchen Daily office catering in Manchester, order a day ahead, delivered before 11 am
Dental clinic Trusted dental health solutions Dental care in Leeds without the long wait, book your own slot on WhatsApp
On-call AC repair Professional, fast, and reliable On-call AC repair in Phoenix, same-day visits, price confirmed before any work starts
Wedding photographer Capturing your precious moments Intimate wedding photography in Bali, two photographers, raw files included
Software studio We build innovative digital solutions Internal apps for teams of 10 to 50, first version running in 6 weeks
Custom cake shop Delicious cakes for every occasion Custom birthday cakes in South London, order two days ahead, same-day delivery available

Every "before" version has the same problem: the sentence could be moved to a competitor's website without changing a word. That is the fastest test for your own headline. If your headline would still make sense on a competitor's site, it is not working yet.

Once the headline is right, the supporting sentence only needs to patch the biggest doubt. For the catering example, here is what an Indonesian caterer in Yogyakarta might write (the running example for the rest of this guide):

The menu changes every day, with options without coconut milk and without chili. We have delivered to more than 40 offices since 2021 and have never been late for lunch.

That sentence contains four facts that could be disproved if they were false. That is exactly what makes it believable. Compare it with "we are committed to delivering the best quality", which cannot be disproved because it contains no claim at all.

Note: If you are stuck on a headline, first write an honest answer to the question "if a friend asked what you do, what would you say?" That spoken answer is almost always better than a headline you spent hours thinking about.

Home page copy, section by section, from hero to close

A well-organized home page follows the order in which people make decisions. The website copywriting outline below is the one that works most often for small and medium businesses in Indonesia, and it transfers well elsewhere. It lists each section's job and an example opening line.

Section Its job Example opening line
Hero Answer "what is this, and who is it for" Daily office catering in Yogyakarta, order a day ahead, delivered before 11 am
Problem Show you understand the situation Ordering office lunches is often a hassle: late deliveries, the same menu every day, and some people cannot eat spicy food
Offer Explain what it concretely looks like Three packages: 20 portions, 50 portions, and over 100 portions. All include delivery within the city
How it works Remove the sense of hassle Chat for today's menu, confirm the numbers, pay after the food arrives
Proof Close the doubt Rina, HR in Sleman: ordered 120 boxes last minute a day ahead, all arrived at 11 on the dot
Price Filter for serious visitors From Rp 22,000 (about $1.40) per portion for orders of 20 portions or more
Close Repeat one call to action Send us the number of people and the date, and we will reply with the menu and total cost

Two notes on this table. First, the "price" section is the one people most often delete, on the grounds that buyers should chat first. From what we have seen, that is a mistake: hiding the price does not make people ask, it makes most of them leave quietly, and many of those who stay turn out not to fit the budget. A range or a starting price is enough.

Second, the "how it works" section is often underrated even though it is cheap and effective. Three short steps remove worries people rarely say out loud, such as being asked to pay upfront or a drawn-out process. If your business is a company profile site, we cover a similar structure in more depth in the guide to building a company profile website.

For the proof section, reject testimonials that say "satisfying service, recommended". They read like decoration. What works are testimonials that describe a situation:

"Ordered 120 boxed lunches for a last-minute office event a day ahead. Everything arrived at 11 on the dot, with a non-spicy option for four people. We are regulars now." Rina, HR in Sleman.

The difference is not the length, but the numbers and a situation the reader can picture. If your business is new and has no testimonials yet, use process photos, a list of ingredients, or a guarantee instead. A broader discussion of how page content affects sales is in the article on how a website increases sales.

Button copy and the WhatsApp opening message

This is where website copywriting for the Indonesian market differs from the English-language guides you usually read. In many countries, the end of a home page is an email form or a buy button. In Indonesia, it is almost always a chat. A Pew Research Center survey of eight middle-income countries, including Indonesia, found a median of 73 percent of adults use WhatsApp, far ahead of the other platforms they measured.

That means the most important button on your page is not "Buy now", but the doorway into a conversation. And what decides whether people press it is the wording.

This section focuses on the wording only. We have covered the technical setup separately: how to create wa.me links, buttons, and widgets is in WhatsApp chat on your website, three ways to set up a form that lands in chat are in WhatsApp forms on your website, and CTA placement strategy plus reply habits are in turning visitors into WhatsApp leads.

Button labels: replace commands with outcomes

Before After Why it works better
Send Get a quote on WhatsApp Names the channel and the outcome, not just a technical action
Contact us Ask about stock and shipping Answers the two questions that really come up most
Learn more See sample results and prices Visitors know exactly what waits behind the click
Sign up now Book a trial slot this Saturday A concrete time makes the decision easier
Click here Work out the cost for 30 portions Feels like a helpful tool, not a request

The pattern repeated in the right-hand column: a good button describes what visitors get, not what they have to do.

A pre-filled opening message

This is the part most often skipped, even though its impact is large. If your WhatsApp button opens an empty chat, visitors have to compose a sentence themselves, and some give up right there. Fill the opening message with the context they have already given you.

Before:

Hi

After:

Hi, I found you on your website. I'd like to ask about daily catering for 25 people in the Sleman area, starting next Monday.

For forms that forward answers to WhatsApp, the principle is the same: the message that lands on your phone should already contain the name, the need, and the quantity. On Forgelo, lead forms are designed to flow straight into WhatsApp, so buyer questions show up in the app you already open every day, not sitting in an email inbox you rarely check.

Microcopy around the button

These three small lines are cheap to write and often have more effect than changing the button color.

  • Under the button: "Replies from 8 am to 8 pm, usually within 30 minutes." This removes the fear that the chat will go unanswered.
  • Above the form: "Fill in these three fields, and we will continue in chat." This lowers the sense of effort before people start typing.
  • After sending: "Sent. Your message is in our WhatsApp and we will reply by this afternoon at the latest." Far more reassuring than "Thank you, we have received your message."

Tip: Only promise reply times you can actually keep. Writing "reply within 5 minutes" and then answering the next morning damages trust more than writing nothing.

The most expensive website copywriting mistakes

These are the patterns we see most often when taking apart small business home pages. The good news is that almost every website copywriting problem on this list can be fixed in one afternoon, without touching the design at all.

Writing for yourself, not the reader. The clearest sign: an opening paragraph full of "we". Flip the point of view. Change "we provide professional sofa cleaning services" to "your sofa cleaned at home, dry in 4 hours".

Piling on adjectives without facts. "Fast, affordable, quality, trusted" is four words that say nothing. Replace them with one fact: "done in 3 working days, two rounds of revisions guaranteed".

One page, five different buttons. When visitors face "Contact us", "View portfolio", "Download brochure", "Join newsletter", and "Chat on WhatsApp" all at once, they usually choose nothing. Pick one main action and repeat it three times on the same page.

Copying the voice of big companies. A coffee stall that writes like a bank sounds strange. The most convincing voice for a small business is your own, the way you explain things to a customer standing in front of you.

Jargon without translation. Words like "end-to-end solution" or "ecosystem synergy" make readers feel stupid, and people who feel stupid leave. If a technical term is genuinely needed, explain it once in everyday language.

Writing once and never checking again. Home page copy should change with the questions that come in. Every time two different buyers ask the same thing on WhatsApp, the answer deserves a place on the home page. If your page is built in a way that is easy to edit, a fix like this takes only a few minutes, and we cover the approach in editing a website section by section.

A mistake that is not on this list but comes up often: do keywords need to be repeated many times? No. Writing clearly and specifically already includes the words people search for. The basics that actually matter are summarized in the website SEO basics guide.

From one sentence to a live home page

The hardest part of website copywriting is not writing good sentences, but starting from a blank page. So the most realistic workflow is to reverse the process: get a complete draft you can critique first, then improve it section by section.

The fastest way now is to describe your business in one sentence to Forgelo and let the structure take shape. The sentence can be as simple as this:

Daily office catering in Yogyakarta, order a day ahead, delivered before 11 am, orders via WhatsApp.

From there you get a complete home page with its sections laid out. What remains is the work only you can do: replacing every generic claim with real numbers, the right city name, your actual opening hours, and testimonials from real customers. Changes are as simple as typing what you want to change, for example "make the headline shorter and mention Yogyakarta" or "add a three-step how to order section", and only that part is rebuilt.

If you want to see example page layouts by type of business before you start, the list of templates by industry is a good starting point. For costs, the pricing page lists the plans available from $9 per month along with the daily AI generation and edit quota on each plan. The big picture from zero to a live business website is in the guide on how to build a website for your business, and if you need visual references, the collection of landing page examples works well for comparison.

Finally, one small habit that helps the most: keep the last five questions that came in through WhatsApp. Reread your home page while picturing the people who sent them. If your page already answers them before they type, your website copywriting is working.

FAQ

Quick answers

How is website copywriting different from ad copywriting?

Ad copy has to stop people who are not looking for anything, so its tone is more provocative. Website copy serves people who have already arrived with a question in mind. That is why website copy answers more and persuades less. If your ad copy succeeds in bringing people to your home page, that page's job is to prove the ad's promise as quickly as possible.

How long should home page copy be?

There is no fixed number, but there is a practical benchmark: every section of the page should make sense without reading the section before it. Nielsen Norman Group research shows visitors only get through about 20 to 28 percent of the words on a page. So the measure is not long or short, but how quickly people find the answer they came for. Keep the hero section under 40 words; the rest can be longer as long as it is broken up with subheadings.

Should website copy use words like best, number one, and trusted?

It is better to avoid them. Almost every competitor uses those words, so they no longer set anything apart. Nielsen Norman Group's research on web writing style found that pages written in an objective style scored higher than promotional versions. Replace superlative claims with facts people can check: opening hours, turnaround time, number of customers, or a clear guarantee.

How do I write copy when my business is new and has no testimonials?

Use a different kind of proof. Photos of your process, photos of real results, a list of the materials or tools you use, a money-back guarantee, or an honest line such as our first out-of-town order ships this week. Honesty about the size of your business is often more convincing than testimonials that sound made up. Collect real testimonials from your first five buyers, then replace that section.

Does website copywriting affect SEO?

Yes, but not through keyword stuffing. What helps is clarity: page titles that name the service and location, subheadings that answer real questions, and paragraphs that get straight to the point. A page that is easy for people to understand is usually easier for search engines to understand too, and it gets read longer before people hit the back button.

What should a button that leads to WhatsApp say?

Describe the action that will happen, from the visitor's point of view, rather than a generic command. Replace Send or Contact us with something specific like Ask about stock and shipping or Get a quote for 30 portions. Add one small line under the button that states your reply hours, for example replies from 8 am to 8 pm. That small line often lifts clicks more than changing the button color.

Can AI write good website copy?

AI is good for producing a first draft and a page structure, so you are not staring at a blank page. But the parts that make copy convincing come from you: real numbers, your city name, your actual opening hours, and the way you usually answer buyers. The most practical approach is to let AI build the skeleton, then replace every generic claim with a fact that is actually true for your business.
